About Us

We are concerned scientists, hydrogeologists, geologists, engineers, GIS programmers and mappers, database programmers, project managers and technical writers who want to make a difference in today's struggling world. We feel called to improve the desperate water conditions we have seen first-hand.

In 2010 Rick and Steve, fueled by their passion put their skills together and made their first trip to Haiti. While there, they saw many relief efforts and questioned "why aren't things getting better"? We learned that technical data and assistance was not available in Haiti and many non- government organizations lack the technical knowledge and expertise to facilitate increasing the availability of a clean and sustainable water supply and educating the population regarding sanitary practices to ensure the water sources remain clean. And so, Water for Small Villages was born.

The Water For Small villages approach is to partner with established organizations in need of technical support to supply clean water. Our method is to complete projects through phases. We are currently working with orphanages, schools, medical teams, and other groups. All collected data is shared with our partners. We are a transparent organization and strive to help those who help others.

One of our goals is to help the local residents become self- sufficient regarding their supply of clean water. As we work with well drillers, we teach well drilling and well construction methods to produce clean and sustainable water. In our time at the schools, orphanages, and clinics, we demonstrate hygiene practices that will sustain the supply of clean water.

In the past several years, we have accomplished much in Haiti:

* Tested a number of public water supply wells throughout Haiti for fecal coliform,

* Educated local residents on the importance of hygiene practices and how to avoid cross-contamination in order to sustain their supply of clean drinking water,

* Developed maps and water quality related databases to share our knowledge.

We have spent significant time at three areas in Haiti to enhance water supply:

Good Samaritan School and Medical Dental Clinic in Verrettes

* Installed a solar powered water system that included a construction of a storage room for the pressure tank, chlorinator, and battery, sink installations at the school and clinic, disinfection of the existing well, trenching for the pipes, erection of a 20-foot pole to house the solar panels, trenching for the pipes, battery bank installation, and all necessary wiring.

New Life School & Orphanage in Port-au-Prince

* Disinfected the existing well and completed repairs to the wellhead and pump to improve the water supply used by more than 100 children.

The Star Orphanage in Gonaives

* Tested shallow water supply wells for fecal coliform

Steve Krupa, Chairman and President

Steve is a licensed Professional Geologist and Ocean Engineer with a Masters degree in Geology from Florida Atlantic University. His areas of interests included goundwater/surface water interactions and shallow and deep aquifer water resource investigations. His work experience includes working offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, United Arab Emirates, Persian Gulf, Australia, Long Island New York, Florida Panhandle and much of Southern Florida with additional onshore work in south Florida. Steve is currently the Section Leader of the Water Supply Hydrogeology Unit at the South Florida Water Management District in West Palm Beach, Florida. He has been with the Dsitrict for over 26 years.

Rick Miessau, Vice President

Rick is a project management professional (PMP) who holds degrees in Oceanography, Engineering and Information Systems. He has over 30 years experience supporting and working on large scale regional water management projects and environmental restoration projects in South Florida. He and his family, over the past 15 years, have performed mission work in Haiti, Madagascar, Honduras and the Philippines.

Aimond Alexis, Vice President

Aimond is a Civil Engineer with an emphasis in Ocean Engineering. His technical expertise includes computer programming, database development and applications, routing and stormwater modeling, and groundwater and surface water modeling interfaces. Aimond currently resides in Haiti.

Cynthia Gefvert, Treasurer

Cynthia is a licensed Professional Geologist with a Bachelor's Degree from Easter Michigan University. She has taken a number of graduate courses in hydrogeology and groundwater modeling. Her hydrogeology experience is primarily with shallow aquifer resources in south Florida. Cynthia is currently the Section Leader of Water Supply Planning at the South Florida Water Management District. Previous work experience includes Director, Human Resources at ADP Network Services, and Sr. Project Manager at several consulting companies.

Organizational Goal

All work is performed by generous volunteers. We are an IRS 501c(3) non- profit organization. All contributions are tax deductible.

Our Motivation

Through our travels we realized how truly fortunate we are having access to clean drinking water. Our experiences taught us how blind we had been and we felt an instant urge to put our skills and water resources experience to use.

  • What We Learned

    We learned the people of Kabilash, Nepal are a close cooperative of people in need of assistance improving their access to clean drinking water. The villagers enthusiastically volunteered their services, access to land, on-hand supplies, and hospitality. The area has received no support since the 2015 earthquake. The school provides education to 440 students from the surrounding villages, some students walk 2 hours each way to attend class. The village is very remote and is only accessible by a steep dirt road 3 hours outside Kathmandu. Given the right contacts it is possible to execute a small project in 7-days.

  • What It Cost

    All funds donated were spent directly on the project. This includes the visit by our team, purchase of construction supplies, delivery, labor, parts and fittings. Our team is made 100% of volunteers who bring experience, skills and work side-by-side with the local poject team.

  • Costs

    The project consists of a two week onsite visit to assess the project in person, establish relationships, negotiate with vendors, appoint a local project team and project coordinator and purchase and deliver supplies. The pipe, valves, cement, concrete all cost $4,000. Cost for the onsite visit, transportation and room & board cost $4,500. Our team collected data, worked side-by-side with the local team to ensure appropriate construction and verify the results. We purchased $500 worth of items to bring back and use in our fundraising events scheduled for later this year where we hope to raise $10,000 to fund 6 additional pipe installations to the most remote areas of the village.

  • Data We Collected

    We sampled and tested water at public fountains. We collected GPS geographic data to establish elevations and locations of the project site, surrounding area and water test sites. We photographed and documented the surrounding area of the Kabilash village. We Collection contact information for pipe supplies, laborers, administrative contacts, hotels, supply vendors, transportation providors and local contacts.
