Technical Info

  1. 1 billion people live without clean drinking water
  2. 2.6 billion people lack adequate sanitation (2002, UNICEF/WHO JMP 2004)
  3. 1.8 million people die every year from diarrhoeal diseases.
  4. 3 900 children die every day from water borne diseases (WHO 2004)
Daily per capita use of water in residential areas:
  • 350 litres in North America and Japan
  • 200 litres in Europe
  • 10-20 litres in sub-Saharan Africa
Over 260 river basins are shared by two or more countries mostly without adequate legal or institutional arrangements.
Quantity of water needed to produce 1 kg of:
  • wheat: 1 000 L
  • rice: 1 400 L
  • beef: 13 000 L
(D.Zimmer,and D.Renault, 2003)

The following technical information is posted to help understand the equipment we use and the approach we take to installing or testing a well.
We assess the local situation, local knowledge and capabilities and access to supplies. We then design and install the best sustainable solution scaled for the village. Where possible we favor installing solar powered submersible 24volt pump systems. We also install and repair Mark II handpump systems.

Testing Techniques

We use test strips, water test meters and where possible we employ water quality laboratory testing. More often we test for bacteria by incubating our water samples, wrapped in aluminum foil, set in direct sunlight.

Well Drilling Info

We work with local drilling crews who possess the necessary drilling equipment. We work with the local crews and share best practices. Once we have worked with a crew and can assure they use approved techniques we are glad to recommend their services. We import pipe, fittings and supplies only when necessary if they are not locally available.
